Proper window sealing is essential for an intact building envelope. If the
Abdichtung is not installed correctly, moisture and cold air can easily penetrate the space between the wall and the window frame. This leads to undesirable consequences, including
All of this ultimately leads to a decrease in property value. Health risks are also a concern. Therefore, when installing or replacing windows, care must always be taken to ensure that the joint between the window and the adjacent building components is properly sealed.
A special case: Sealing floor-to-ceiling windows
In construction practice, floor-to-ceiling windows are used on balconies or terraces, and sealing them is particularly complex. The transitions are often designed without a threshold to ensure barrier-free access. However, a so-called zero threshold represents a special case in window sealing. Additional measures must therefore be taken to prevent water from penetrating and seeping behind the window. This includes, as stipulated by the flat roof guidelines, the installation of a drainage solution. Therefore, a material is required for sealing the windows that allows for the integration of this drainage system. At the same time, it must adhere to a wide variety of substrates, as different materials are present at the window connection.
Liquid Waterproofing for Sealing Windows
Liquid polymer systems based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) are suitable for sealing windows at the transition from the floor to the wall. These systems offer numerous beneficial properties:
resistant to weathering and UV radiation
accommodates temperature- and structure-related expansion without damage
adheres over the entire surface, even on complex geometries and vertical surfaces
Excellent compatibility with other materials and substrates
no mechanical fastening required
When PMMA-based systems are applied correctly, they effectively prevent the window seal from becoming loose. This ensures long-term watertightness, so that moisture penetration—and the resulting mold growth—stand no chance.
Triflex ProDetail for Window Waterproofing
We developed our Triflex ProDetail product specifically for component transitions, such as those found in window waterproofing. The PMMA system is nonwoven-reinforced, meaning that a special nonwoven fabric is sandwiched between two layers of liquid resin. This gives the seals dynamic crack-bridging properties and makes them particularly robust. Structural movements or material expansion are absorbed without causing damage. For use in the area of a zero threshold, Triflex ProDetail was tested and approved by the renowned Institute for Window Technology (ift), in Rosenheim—a first on the German market. The waterproofing system was applied to eleven different substrates. Furthermore, it underwent extensive testing in combination with a window profile, insulation, and a drainage solution, each supplied by partner companies. The result: Even under extreme conditions, absolutely no moisture penetrates through the window seal at the zero threshold. The tested solution provides building owners, architects, and window manufacturers with planning and installation reliability.
