The largest walk-in globe is the Mercateum, a monument commemorating the trade relations between India and the Augsburg region, located in Königsbrunn. Situated between the Königstherme and the municipal high school, the globe features a world map by the Spanish cosmographer Diego Ribero. To ensure that the spherical monument remains safely above the water’s surface in the long term, master roofers from the local company Wildgrube & Sohn GmbH sealed the water basin—made of asphalt and concrete—using the Triflex ProTect waterproofing system. This project demonstrates the two-component waterproofing resin’s excellent workability and its suitability for hydraulic structures. Perched on a platform in the middle of a water basin is the ten-meter-high globe, a faithful projection of the world map drawn on parchment in 1529. Inside, exhibits on five levels offer insights into the beginnings and heyday of long-distance trade. Two walkways lead visitors across the surrounding water basin into the steel-frame structure.
