Durable, reliable patio waterproofing is essential to ensure that residents can enjoy their extended living space for years to come. If leaks allow moisture to penetrate, this can lead to serious damage to the building structure. It is important that the patio surface is perfectly sealed, as patio waterproofing is exposed to weather conditions such as wind, water, and sunlight due to its exposed location. In addition, the material used must also withstand localized mechanical stress, such as that caused by moving patio furniture.
Terrace Waterproofing with Liquid Plastic
Liquid-applied systems based on the synthetic resin polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA for short) excel in patio waterproofing thanks to their durability and long service life. Their other advantages include:
Tested and certified product quality
Many creative design options
Accessible design feasible
Flame-retardant options for fire safety
Also ideal for renovations
Waterproofing an existing terrace can usually be done without demolition and, consequently, without generating dust or dirt. The liquid polymer is applied to the existing surface—such as concrete—which is easily achievable on a wide variety of substrates thanks to the system’s low profile and PMMA’s excellent adhesion properties.
Various systems for terrace waterproofing
At Triflex, we offer various PMMA solutions for terrace waterproofing, the selection of which depends entirely on the specific on-site conditions. Generally, however, the same products are used for terraces as for balconies, since the requirements are essentially the same. Triflex BTS-P, for example, is a versatile waterproofing system with a multi-layer structure consisting of:
Triflex BIS is also available for terrace waterproofing. This can be used in conjunction with Triflex BTS-P when thermal insulation is desired. The additional insulation layer effectively prevents thermal bridges and mold growth. Triflex ProDrain is used where the substrate is damp. The self-supporting decoupling membrane allows moisture to escape, thereby protecting the building structure. Triflex BWS is applied under loose and firmly installed third-party coverings (such as tiles or slab coverings). And with Triflex BFS, building owners get a terrace coating that meets the requirements of a Class OS 8 surface protection system.
Finally, all systems feature the integrated, nonwoven-reinforced detail waterproofing Triflex ProDetail. This was developed specifically for component connections, such as those found in terrace waterproofing at the transition to doors.
Terrace Waterproofing with an Aesthetically Pleasing Finish
Liquid-applied terrace waterproofing systems are finished with a sealant that can be applied in a variety of finishes and colors. Ultimately, homeowners want the design of their outdoor spaces to be just as personalized as their interior design. Here at Triflex, we offer four surface options and a total of over 70 colors to choose from, so there are no limits to creativity.
With Triflex Chips Design, a decorative aggregate is added to the finish. Its slightly grainy texture gives the floor slip-resistant properties, which can be enhanced by adding quartz sand. With Triflex Colour Design, eight different shades are available. The colored aggregate mixture is incorporated into the finish and then sealed. With Triflex Stone Design, a natural-looking result can be achieved thanks to the addition of marble chippings or granite chippings. This also provides the substrate with excellent drainage. Triflex Creative Design rounds out the range of surface options for patio waterproofing. Design films are applied to the floor, which can be used to mimic a tile pattern, for example. Customized decorative patterns can be created using Triflex FloorTattoos.
