OS 8: Deck Sealants for Parking Garages
Surface protection systems—OS for short—are divided into different classes. Class OS 8 systems comprise rigid surface sealants for areas subject to heavy vehicular traffic and high mechanical stress. They are primarily used in parking lots, but also on the ramps and spindles of underground and multi-story parking garages to prevent damage to the concrete structure. In addition to vehicles entering and exiting, these surfaces are also exposed to weather conditions and chemical influences (such as those from fuel or chlorides dissolved in de-icing salt). Without adequate surface protection, this can lead to cracks or spalling, allowing moisture to penetrate the structure. OS 8 liquid polymer systems based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) provide surfaces with long-lasting wear resistance. Additional benefits of OS 8-class surface sealants include:
reliable and long-term protection against moisture penetration
slip-resistant even when wet
Available in a variety of colors
Low-profile system structure
The thin-film system structure of our surface protection systems in accordance with OS 8 results in a low weight of the sealant itself. For this reason, the systems are not only ideal for new construction but also for renovation projects, as they do not affect structural integrity.
OS 8 classification ensures safety
Information on the properties that a surface protection system in accordance with OS 8 must possess can be found in the DafStb guideline on the protection and repair of concrete components. Part 2 of this guideline specifies the classification into the various protection classes and provides information on the application areas in which products of the respective class may be used. In Part 3 of the guideline, companies will also find useful information on the execution and monitoring of coating work with OS 8 systems. For further guidance, refer to EN 1062 (Coating Materials), EN 1504-9, and DIN 50035. Our technical data sheets and safety data sheets also contain information on the surface protection class.
OS 8-Certified Systems from Triflex
Our Triflex DeckCoat intermediate deck coating system meets the requirements of OS 8. The fast-reacting, PMMA-based sealant requires shorter curing times than alternatives made from EP or PUR resins. Surfaces treated with this system can be put back into service quickly, minimizing closure periods and traffic disruptions. As a result, repair work can be carried out with maximum cost-effectiveness. The same applies to Triflex DeckFloor, another OS 8 system. This is a waterproof thick-film system with static crack bridging, designed specifically for high-traffic areas. It can also be used to provide a permanently wear-resistant coating for areas such as entrances and exits, spindles, or ramps. Both systems are also certified as “flame-retardant.”
Designing Parking Areas with OS 8 Systems
Class OS 8 liquid polymer coatings not only provide reliable protection for the building structure, but they can also be applied in a variety of colors to create a clear and visually appealing design. For example, using color-coded pathways can improve wayfinding for parking garage users and thus enhance traffic safety. Triflex Cryl Finish 209 is available in a wide range of colors, including frequently requested shades such as traffic yellow or red. Incorporating quartz sand into the OS 8 system gives the surface extra traction and ensures enhanced slip resistance even in wet conditions. Finally, a colored finish can be used to reflect the parking garage operator’s corporate identity.
