If surface protection systems meet the requirements of Category OS 11, they exhibit enhanced crack-bridging properties for sealing structural elements with construction joints, such as in parking garages and on open decks. This is specified in the DAfStb guideline on the protection and repair of structural concrete components.
Class OS 11 coatings ensure that reinforced concrete structures are effectively protected against external influences. These include, above all:
chemical substances such as de-icing salts, fuels, or oil
mechanical stresses caused by vehicles and pedestrians
Systems classified as OS 11 are resistant to all these influences and offer building owners long-lasting and reliable protection. Renovation intervals are extended, maintenance requirements are minimal, and the building’s economic viability is ensured for many years. A single system can thus deliver a wide range of benefits.
Areas exposed to the elements that are accessible to pedestrians and vehicles—such as rooftops or parking garages—should be coated in accordance with OS 11. Depending on the level of stress, a distinction is made between OS 11a and OS 11b. An OS 11a system is a two-coat system that offers higher wear resistance compared to single-coat systems in accordance with OS 11b. Further information on the different properties of OS 11a and OS 11b can be found on our website.
Triflex ProDeck (OS 11a/OS 11b)
At Triflex, we offer various products to meet the requirements of Class OS 11. With Triflex ProDeck, applicators create a surface that meets the requirements of surface protection class OS 11a for top decks and OS 11b for intermediate decks, underground parking garages, ramps, and spindles. The system is composed entirely of a single material: polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA for short. This creates a chemical bond that fuses with the substrate across the entire surface. Water penetration stands no chance. The result is an effective barrier against moisture and aggressive substances that withstands the chemical, mechanical, and thermal stresses found in parking areas. The OS 11a/OS 11b coating is highly durable and wear-resistant. This is also demonstrated by the results of the PAT test. In a simulation test conducted by the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, a car tire was moved across a surface sealed with Triflex ProDeck at a specific load and speed. The result: the surface protection of the wear layer remained intact even after 10,000 test cycles. The system design meets all requirements of surface protection classes OS 11a/OS 11b in accordance with DIN 18532, Part 6, and the DAfStb guideline “Protection and Repair of Concrete Structures” (SIB 2001).
Triflex ProDeck System Structure (OS 11a / OS 11b)
Triflex ProDeck (OS 11a/OS 11b) is equipped with an innovative special reinforcement: Triflex ProMesh. This redistributes forces and ensures that movements of the substrate are reduced. Signs of wear, which occur primarily in the areas of curves and ramps, are minimized. The system structure of the OS 11a/OS 11b coating is applied in several steps:
Wearing Course, Variant 1
Other system components (e.g., Triflex ProDetail detail waterproofing or Triflex Cryl RS 240 leveling compound)
The various versions of the wear layers differ in their grain size. Quartz sand (0.7–1.2 mm) or fine aggregate can be embedded into the still-fresh sealant. This optimizes the surface’s slip resistance and traction. In both cases, a colored finish is optional. This allows for the creation of a visually appealing appearance, even in the colors of a specific corporate identity upon request. Above all, however, colored OS 11 coatings are in demand to enhance user safety through directional arrows and separately marked walkways.
Cost-Effective OS 11 Coating
A key advantage of the OS 11 coating Triflex ProDeck is the extremely fast curing time of the special resin, resulting in very short closure periods. This also applies to all other Triflex products that meet OS 11 requirements, such as Triflex ProPark or Triflex CPS-. Coating work can be carried out in sections, so that ongoing operations are hardly disrupted. This benefits both building owners and users alike. Shortly after application, the OS 11 coating forms a seamless, joint-free surface that withstands high mechanical stress for years, requires little maintenance, and shows no signs of wear even after prolonged use. With a low weight per unit area of less than 10 kg/m², OS 11 systems can be applied to almost any substrate, whether concrete or asphalt. There is no risk of compromising structural integrity, and demolition of the existing structure can generally be avoided. This saves costs. Coatings in surface protection class OS 11 thus meet all requirements for cost-effective rehabilitation.
