Sealing the Roofs of Reinforced Concrete Silos

Planned, supported, completed. RWE Power AG is currently building one of the world’s most modern coal-fired power plants, with a capacity of two 800 MW units, in Hamm, Westphalia. The twin-unit plant is being constructed, commissioned, and brought to commercial operation by RWE Technology GmbH. The power plant includes a complex of control room and fly ash silos, where the fly ash and limestone powder generated are stored and loaded. To protect the roofs of the reinforced concrete silos from the elements and to seamlessly integrate numerous details into the waterproofing surface, specialized contractors from the Duisburg-based company Stromberg sealed them using “ Triflex ProTect.” The roof waterproofing system, based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), permanently seals existing cracks as well as material transitions. Stefan Lindner, Senior Project Manager for Construction Technology at RWE Technology, is impressed by the high-performance waterproofing system as well as the flexible and competent project execution by the liquid polymer manufacturer Triflex.

Requirements for the Renovation

  • Sealing of Steel/Reinforced Concrete Joints
  • Sealing of changing geometries, such as horizontal, flat to cylindrical
  • Recurring maintenance intervals
  • Sealing of cracks in sloped concrete
  • Sealing of doweled fastening points
  • Renovation under unpredictable weather conditions
  • Highest safety precautions
