Expansion joints absorb harmful stresses
Expansion joints are provided in large, rigid structural elements, such as the concrete slabs found in parking garages and underground parking facilities. They accommodate structural movements, temperature-induced expansion, or usage-related shifts in individual structural elements—such as those caused by the traffic load of passenger cars. The absence of expansion joints can lead to stresses, which in turn can cause cracks in the structure. In the worst-case scenario, these cracks can compromise the structural integrity of the building and allow moisture to penetrate. This results in corrosion-related damage, which also endangers the building’s structural integrity. For this reason, the joints themselves must also be protected against moisture penetration. In construction practice, a combination of detailed waterproofing and joint profiles is used as a solution. To ensure reliable interaction between these components, designers and building owners must rely on the experience of the manufacturers of both components. Tested systems help ensure the compatibility of the materials. We at Triflex, a leading European specialist in PMMA liquid plastics, offer just such a system: the Triflex ProJoint+ expansion joint waterproofing system.
Playing it safe with movement joints
The Triflex ProJoint+ expansion joint waterproofing system consists of nonwoven-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin combined with a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer joint profile. It is suitable for both vertical and horizontal movements. The carbon fiber composite profile can be quickly and easily cut to fit any joint geometry. This makes the expansion joint waterproofing system a reliable solution, even for large expansion joints up to 50 mm wide or complex structures. The liquid-applied waterproofing with a polymer profile has a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of the surface waterproofing/coating, ensuring good material compatibility. The result: The expansion joint formed with this system forms a force-locked bond with the surface waterproofing or coating. This ensures permanently effective protection against moisture penetration even at the transition. Because the system-integrated joint profile is metal-free, there is no risk of corrosion. As a result, the Triflex ProJoint+ expansion joint waterproofing system is resistant to frost and de-icing salt.
Prioritizing Quality in the Waterproofing of Expansion Joints
At Triflex, we set high standards for the materials used to seal expansion joints. We adhere to strict quality standards to ensure certified safety. That is why, for example, we had Triflex ProJoint+ tested for eight million wheel rollovers, with the following result: The expansion joint sealed with our system withstands traffic from passenger cars and trucks exerting a force of 600 kN in accordance with DIN 1072. Furthermore, in line with our commitment to sustainability, all components are tested for their environmental compatibility. In doing so, we pay particular attention to the use of renewable raw materials. Our system holds European Technical Approvals (ETA) with the highest possible technical classifications according to ETAG 005. The material is also tested in accordance with EN 13501-1 and classified as “difficult to ignite.”
Planning Certainty for Expansion Joints
Our waterproofing system for expansion joints is suitable for both new construction and renovations: Thanks to the short curing time of the PMMA resin, the surface is open to traffic again after just a few hours. The joint profile can be replaced individually in the event of damage, which makes partial repairs correspondingly easy. Ultimately, the following applies: Only when the joints are securely integrated into the waterproofing can they reliably protect the concrete. With Triflex, you get a system backed by a warranty covering not only the waterproofing and coating but also the joint profile. Only through tested material compatibility do you achieve a high degree of planning reliability and dependability. With us, you’re not just relying on a certified system, but on 40 years of experience in the international market.
